In New Jersey, anyone who is at least 17 years old can apply for a motorcycle permit, which is the first step toward obtaining a motorcycle license. However, if you are under 18, you will need a parent or guardian’s consent. There are two ways to obtain a motorcycle license without possessing a driver’s license:

1. Make an appointment at the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) and get a valid NJ motorcycle permit (take the written test and eye test). Then make an appointment with the NJ MVC to take the road test on your own motorcycle.

Step 1:

Obtain a Motorcycle Permit

The first step in getting your motorcycle license is to obtain a motorcycle permit. To do this, you must visit your local MVC agency and pass a written knowledge test. The test covers topics such as motorcycle operation, road rules, and safety practices. You will also need to pass a vision test and provide proof of identity and residency.

Step 2:

Practice Riding

Once you have your permit, it’s time to practice riding. If you are under 21, you must practice for at least six months. If you are 21 or older, the required practice period is three months. During this time, it’s important to gain as much riding experience as possible, focusing on different riding conditions and scenarios.

Step 3:

Schedule and Pass the Road Test

After completing the required practice period, you can schedule your road test with the MVC. The road test evaluates your ability to operate a motorcycle safely and confidently. Upon passing the road test, you will receive your motorcycle endorsement or motorcycle license.

2) Take the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s (MSF) Basic Rider Course (BRC). No NJ motorcycle permit and no motorcycle are required to take this course.

The smart choice is the second option, where you can learn how to ride a motorcycle and also get licensed in about 16 hours (2 day riding course including motorcycle and road test). Check more info below on RIDING SCHOOLS
